Proposal to let users delete offensive MeFi posts What, and let the inmates run the asylum?! [#]

Fun Darts Game There's a flamewar a-brewin' (no, no, don't try to remember what it's about), and sometimes it's best to find something to play with so that you can ignore the shitstorm around you. It'll go away, but in the meantime, I'll be over there, playing that game. Same goes for Yahoo! Pool. Wanna play? [#]

MetaFilter thread on the disappearing, reappearing Dave Winer YAADT. [#]

That about wraps it up for Dave Winer's hiatus Shortest. Hiatus. Ever! [#]

video of Cory Doctorow, Ben Hammersley, Meg Hourihan, et al at reboot6 Let me get this straight: 50+ MB of video for each, but no 5 KB (if that) transcripts? Update: I watched Cory's, Meg's and Ben's talks, and of the three, Cory only has notes on Meg's talk as far as I can tell. [#]

Politics at the Web-Roots The Internet, finally, is not only a mainstream media source but organizing tool in politics. [#]

Don Park's Take on Echo [#]

Dave Winer takes a break from Scripting News [#]

Differences between RSS and Echo Cool, but when all is said and done, there needs to be an 'official' web page (or FAQ) explaining all the differences between the two. [#]

Dave has never see users support a struggling company Not even his own? In the early 90s I supported GeoWorks and their 'operating environment' PC/GEOS 1.2. Their thumbtack menu was a pretty cool idea. [#]

Six Apart: Why We Need Echo Turns into a discussion about ASCII, XML-RPC and internationalization. [#]

A Design Process Revealed The first phrase describes me well: not an artist, not a designer. Are there more articles or books like this article? [#]

Parsing HTML for RSD It's that easy! [#]

Is Google God? Not really, Friedman seems to be saying, but broadband will make it easier for terrorists to recruit, which means it's time to America to build bridges. [#]

Globe and Mail XML feeds [#]

Radio as a Movable Type Outliner My trial period ran out on Radio, but I gotta say, this looks very cool. [#]

The ant and the grasshoper A programming parable. [#]

RSS is pretty safe [#]

MT isn't open source He's right. [#]

time_since() PHP function I'll post an MT template that makes use of this function later in this weekend. [#]

Are dynamic languages going to replace static languages? Argues that unit testing makes type checking moot. [#]

Zempt 0.3 to be released July 1st Yeah, on Canada Day! [#]

Google Toolbar 'BlogThis' Rankles Rivals Dave Winer posts mock image, Anil Dash gets a lengthy quote. Winer wins this round for demanding that he and his competitors be included. [#]

Echo support planned for SharpReader [#]

Echo support planned for Syndirella [#]

Echoes of RSS? St. Laurent wants to be on the sidelines too. [#]

"Echo may really be 'the market' deciding to upturn its apple cart" [#]

Mark Pilgrim "deletes" own flame Although I dunno, doesn't the red make it stand out? [#]

Using foaf:weblog in your FOAF file And done. [#]

Origin of "Six Apart" Confirms my suspicion. [#]

June 25, 2003

My submission to the Echo logo, uh, contest A remix of Mena's submission. So much for staying on the sidelines. [#]

Zen Gardener Fellow Vancouverite Tim Bray talks about (and to) fellow Vancouverite Dave Shea. [#]

Zempt Dev Blog As if I'm going to follow it: Bill tells me what he's accomplished in IM anyway. [#]

Microsoft and the New Google Toolbar Google can avoid a lot of criticism by making the Toolbar a cross-browser tool. [#]

They're calling it "The Echo Project" Too much of a 'brand name' for my liking. [#]

Google Toolbar Beta Probably a good thing that Mozilla Firebird (which Google Toolbar isn't designed for) already has pop-up blocking and a Google search box built-in. [#]

Non-funky MT RSS 2.0 template that doesn't require plugins [#]

Keep track of people disallowing MSNBOT Because increasing your potential audience is bad. [#]

TypePad beta goes into round two Sign up for the notification list and find out how you can get involved. [#]

"On this day" links in Movable Type [#]

Japanese MovableType wiki [#]

Posted Elsewhere using Trackback tutorial Useful for keeping track of your digital footprints. [#]

New syndication format roadmap I support the roadmap because, at this very initial stage, a balance has been struck between being inclusive and being structured. The wiki format (about which I am agnostic in a general sense) seems well-suited to this type of discussion. [#]

Brief history of hypertext Necessarily link-rich. [#]

SourceForge project for Syndirella As yet there's only implicit blessing from Dmitry Jeremov for this project, not explicit. [#]

Don Park illustrates what "funky" RSS feeds look like Finally. [#]

Upgrading to Movable Type from Blogger I like how it's 'upgrading to' as opposed to 'converting to'. Also notes that the most recent blog entry in Blogger turns out to have a post ID of 1 after importing to MT. [#]

Dmitry Jemerov no longer coding for Syndirella He has, however, encouraged that the project move to SourceForge. [#]

MT template for not-funky RSS 2.0 Requires the DaylightOrStandard plugin. [#]

A gentle introduction to the RSS controversy [#]

Evidently Safari 1.0 will be released today It would make more sense that I blogged this if I was a Mac user. [#]

Weather and RSS Also: RSS as web service? [#]

Storing Hierarchical Data in MySQL using PHP [#]

June 22, 2003

Dave Winer: "I was bending over backwards to be as kind as I possibly could to Google and SixApart" No comment. Update: he deleted the post in question. That above quote was in the original, much longer post. [#]

Don Park: "RDF is fucked up, MT is fucked up, Six Apart is fucked up" [#]

MT clarifies license structure, announces developer/service provider network [#]

Moderate comments in MT Requires hacking the MT code, mt-rebuild, and PHP on your server. [#]

June 21, 2003

XML Community Update These roundups are useful for XML outsiders like myself who wish to stay that way. [#]

Transforming XML with PHP I'm lower-tier intermediate in terms of PHP skills (that may be generous), but it's nice to know that PHP has XSLT built in. [#]

Charles Platt on Orrin Hatch's real motives Good example of a politician saying something but not really meaning it. Also: purposely adding unconstitutional provisions to a bill so that the Supreme Court can kill the whole thing. [#]

RSS 2.0 Dates: a developer's (and publisher's) perspective [#]

June 20, 2003

Cool Javascript select + search tip As noted, Firebird already has this. Select, right-click and click 'Web Search for...'. [#]

Styling your first post differently in Blogger This hack isn't limited to Blogger. It can be done in MT by replacing the appropriate template tags. [#]

APIs as "open data" initiatives Amazon and Google as application servers. [#]

Weblogues.com The French-language equivalent of weblogs.com. [#]

Alltheweb catches up with Google, adds spellchecking Now all it needs is a grammar checker. 'So next time someone asks you to spell 'Alopescia'. You'll know not to be confused with 'alopecia'.' Those two sentences should actually be just one. [#]

Funky RSS / Unfunky RSS buttons [#]

how search engine users use search Well, I use the advanced search function of search engines, but granted, only 0.5% of the time. [#]

June 19, 2003

My alma mater is redesigning They have pretty detailed design notes, but they're using tables for layout. Oh well, it looks nice. Official launch date is July 7th. [#]

June 18, 2003

Weblog Etiquette Not sure I agree with that, nor that anything posted to the web should remain there permanently. There will be a slightly longer post on the main site about this later, time permitting. [#]

request to Six Apart: link from post in MT to live version If we're going for small requests, here's mine: if there's only one result in the internal search, go to that post immediately, which would save a needless click. [#]

CSS 3 Selectors The good stuff is on page 2. [#]

adam is having a blogwarming, and you're invited! That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight. [#]

What makes a good weblog? Lack of typos is the sine qua non. [#]

MT Plugin Manager in beta soon [#]

Vs. Trackback: aggregation of Trackback commentary (in French) [#]

June 15, 2003

Winer: "MT reinvented RSS, and had the audacity to call it RSS" The Trotts are doing this, according to Winer, in order to keep data interchange out of the hands of everyday users. [#]

June 14, 2003

Proposed revised (non-funky) RSS 2.0 template for MT [#]

Why Dave Winer called MT's RSS support funky He says it's because in the RSS 2.0 template, MT produces RDF where RSS is called for. [#]

CSMonitor profiles Snopes.com More website review than anything, but the Urban Legends Reference Pages site is pretty dang good, you have to admit. The enduring Bush/Clinton military binoculors myth is one of my faves. [#]

Trackback criticism corrections and notes Trackback does sort of suck for comments, because of the excerpt. But they very nearly guarantee the identity of the commenter. (This idea came out when some believed people were pretending to be Dave Winer in people's weblog comments.) [#]

MT Tags reference Save yourself from wading through the manual. The whole Empty Pages (a pun on "MT Pages") is worth your while if you're a dedicated MT nerd. [#]

June 13, 2003

Well that about wraps it up for IE/Mac [#]

June 12, 2003

Mathowie uses Trackback to aggregate himself Cool. And there are RSS feeds (see the bottom right of Matt's site). [#]

University of Calgary's Virus Course Saw this at PoliTech, but had to do a bit of searching for this link. This in the context of Rogers Cadenhead's post re: Mark Pilgrim's pseudo-prank. The discussion in the Cadenhead post is getting heated, with that catch-phrase ('I am not a lawyer, but...') which leads me to ignore everything that follows, no matter who says it. Would you take law advice from someone who isn't a lawyer? Update the next day: Cadenhead follows up. He's right. [#]

No-Host Trackback But isn't TypePad going to put these guys out of, uh, business? [#]

Trackback criticism 'I don't see anyone using TrackBack for anything other than tracking links to their articles.' I'll put my hat in with PB and Zuly: some people (i.e. me) use it let people aggregate MT-related posts. Quoth Anil: 'the biggest problem is that people confuse one use of the protocol for its entire realm of possibility. we're working on fixing it.' [#]

June 11, 2003

Weblog devoted to flaming Dave Winer Come on boys, easy on the exclamation points!!!!!! [#]

Adams: Shirky's essay is crap [#]

O'Reilly: Shirky's essay is brilliant [#]

June 4, 2003

Outlining for Movable Type Users Yes please. [#]

Photodude's alternate take on Winer's comments re: warbloggers Just because fighting stops, doesn't mean the war's over. Just ask North and South Korea. [#]

Convert OPML link directory outline to bookmarks.html [#]

Photodude asks at least to consider opposing views before signing Lessig's petition ...a petition written, evidently by Lauren Gelman. (As a rule, I don't sign petitions, because of a belief that the powers-that-be pretty much ignore them.) [#]

Udell readers' user-agents He has almost as many people reading through SharpReader (one of whom is me) as with Mozilla. [#]

Clay Shirky's notes on Trepia My IM 'buddies' are already ranked by proximity: for some reason, all the people (except for my cousin on my MSN and ICQ lists are close to me (within a car drive or ferry ride). Everybody on my Yahoo! and AIM lists are people in fairly far-off places. It wasn't intentional, though, it just happened that way. [#]

RSS Core Profile DRAFT 2 An updated version of DRAFT 1. (I'm liking how many webloggers put an update—or brief explanation of update—at the top of a post, where it is most likely to be seen.) [#]

Internet Café Regulation in China: A Policy Review [PDF] Argues that the crackdown on Chinese Internet cafés has more to do with social regulation than political regulation. [#]

Briefs of the keynotes at the China and the Internet Conference [#]

June 3, 2003

Elwyn Jenkins aggregates some responses to 'What Makes a Weblog a Weblog' This weblog (and others of mine) fail horribly in terms of permalinks in Thomas' ultimate weblogging system. [#]

June 2, 2003

MP3's of OSCOM conference available? I'd be interested in hearing the Dave Winer keynote. Partly to hear what Dave sounds like, but also because apparently sparks flew. The server which evidently hosts the MP3s was down at this writing, however. [#]

Operator of 'GoogleGuy Says' switches format Understandable, and instead of folding under the pressure, the website's operator (not, it should be pointed out, GoogleGuy himself) makes the site better by assigning priority to GoogleGuy's messages. GoogleGuy Says is a must-read filter for finding out semi-official news about Google. [#]

Lexicoblogue: French glossary of blog-related terms Evidently 'Trackback' translates to 'Rétrolien'. [#]

2001 Wired article on Dave Winer The late Douglas Adams: "Dave is one of my favorite sources of information and opinion on the Web. His opinions are passionately held, well-informed, intelligent, argumentative, and quite often wrong." [#]

Linking vs. Searching: Guidelines for Use An executive summary of the full research summary. [#]

How we really use the Web It'd be interesting if there's an article out there on how people really read weblogs. [#]

What I Hate About Your Programming Language [#]

Strong Typing vs. Strong Testing Fawns over Python. [#]

Newly Digital writing project I'll join in on this meme in a couple weeks, conveniently after it's died down. [#]

Why use RSS? Shirley goes offers a link-rich mini-essay on why (and how) she uses RSS. [#]
